What is Nervous System Dysregulation?

When we think about the nervous system, we often think of it as the body’s central control system. It helps regulate how we feel, how we communicate, and how our bodies respond without us having to consciously think about it. However, the nervous system can sometimes become out of balance with the rest of the body. This is known as nervous system dysregulation (NSD).

NSD can show up in many ways. Physical symptoms may include chronic fatigue, frequent headaches, digestive issues, and sleep disturbances such as insomnia or difficulty getting restful sleep. Emotional symptoms may include increased anxiety, feelings of depression or hopelessness, irritability, or anger outbursts. Cognitive symptoms may include brain fog, confusion, trouble concentrating, memory problems, and racing thoughts.

One helpful way to begin addressing dysregulation is by identifying negative thought patterns and working to change them over time. Learning to view situations from a different perspective can also help reduce the sense of threat or distress that the body may be experiencing.
